Free Basic Bird Education Classes - General Information

Everyone interested in fostering or adopting a bird must attend our class on bird care prior to receiving a bird from us. This class is free of charge (although donations are appreciated) and is open to the general bird-loving public.

The class covers these topics:

• Proper avian care
• Proper avian diet
• Symptoms of illness and first aid
• General husbandry
• Taming and training

We have basic bird care classes scheduled throughout the Bay Area in the North Bay, San Francisco/Peninsula, South Bay, East Bay, and Sacramento Area. For those who cannot attend a class in person, we occasionally schedule phone classes.

Register: To reserve your spot for a class, email class@mickaboo.org with the location of the class, and class date, in the subject line. If you want to adopt a cockatiel, please say so in the email.

North Bay

San Francisco

Classes are generally held in San Francisco the fourth Saturday of the month. Please do not park in the Pet Food Express lot as it is rather small and Pet Food Express wants to leave that for their shopping customers.

We will take a short break halfway through the class.

South Bay

Sunnyvale

The Sunnyvale class is regularly scheduled for the third Sunday of the month unless stated otherwise

Individual classes are listed below. Seating is limited so please bring a a folding chair, if you can. 

Please do not bring your own birds to the South Bay class.

Please confirm that the class is still scheduled for your preferred time.

San Jose

We are offering classes again in San Jose. Andy's is now located in Downtown San Jose, near the DeAnza Hotel, just a few blocks off of Hwy 87.

East Bay

Walnut Creek

Classes are generally held in Walnut Creek the fourth Saturday of the month. Please do not park in the Trader Joe's lot. There is parking on the street.

We will take a short break halfway through the class.

Hayward

Classes are usually but not always held in Hayward every 2nd Sunday of the month (check date carefully). If a date is not listed below, please check with us at class@mickaboo.org

Directions:
From 880, take Tennyson west, left on Hesperian, right at Arf, 2nd left into Pueblo Springs.  Clubhouse is at 2nd cross
street on the left.  NO ON-STREET PARKING ALLOWED -  PLEASE USE GUEST PARKING ONLY.   Thank you.

Central Valley

PLEASE RSVP to class@mickaboo.org if you are planning to attend any class, but especially the Tracy class.  Since this is a new class for us, we need to know how many attendees will be there.  Thank you.

Basic Bird Care Phone Class

Criteria for attending a phone class:

• You must have submitted an application
• You must live out of the area or be physically unable to attend a regularly scheduled class

Send an email to class@mickaboo.org to ask that you be enrolled in a phone class, including an explanation of why you cannot take a regular class.  Once you have been accepted for the class, you will receive toll-free call in information.

*Attendance of a non-Mickaboo hosted class does not fulfill the Mickaboo education requirement in our adoption application.
