Much tech work remains to be done!
Labels: techteam

Hi all!

I'm sure most everyone at this point has been involved in, or at least heard about, our reorganization efforts. In the face of an incoming crush of birds and a dearth of foster homes and money, we've had some organization folks burn out and take a break. Others have spawned talk of communication breakdowns, fundraising, outreach and all the things we need to do and occasionally need to revamp.

The technical team is no exception to this. We spend great amounts of time putting together infrastructure, tools and documentation to try to help Mickaboo operate at its absolute peak efficiency - yet for all our hard work our biggest weakness is the same as the organization itself: Outreach. Evangelism. Plain old tootin' our horns.

We're geeks, we're not good at that evangelism stuff! Well, we should try to be - at least internally!

So, to try to help address this I've decided that I'm going to pester people more. Starting with this – subscribing the discuss@mickaboo email address to receive notifications when our blog (http://mickaboo.org/blog.html) is updated.

Some more changes are coming soon and you'll read about them here (or in your inbox) as they're implemented. Feedback is always welcome to tech@mickaboo.org, our technical support helpline. Be warned that my own personal life is in complete chaos right now so I'm NOT spending a lot of time on Mickaboo - but the precious few minutes per day that I do spend, I'm hoping this will help me spend well.

Finally, I'd like to take this opportunity to send a sqwawk-out to my devoted and utterly under-thanked technical team: You guys know who you are, I really cannot do this job without you, and you'll get some specific by-name mentions in this blog as soon as I get in touch with you and find out if you're OK having yourselves outed!

Virtually yours;
– Matt, the Tech Team Lead

Last changed Aug 10, 2008 23:15 by Matt

Hi all! There is a raffle coming up at the Mickaboo Summer Picnic to fund the medical care of Oliver, the Amazon. He's had a very tough time and is still recovering from a lot of stress!

If you'd like to buy raffle tickets, you can get them here:

Congratulations on number 1,000

Congratulations to our lucky budgie pair, Boo and Houdini, who mark Mickaboo's 1000th recorded success story!

Our volunteers are very happy to reach this milestone, but there's plenty of work left to go! There are currently 155 birds on our site waiting to be added to that prestigious list called "Happily Adopted" and sadly, as many arrive each month as we manage to adopt out.

Still, lets all take some time out of our usual hustle to bring down our available birds list and give a huge pat on the back to all the volunteers that make this organization spin. As we can now officially say, over a thousand birds have been directly affected by the efforts of our volunteers, and who knows how many others have been touched in some way?

So far so good!

So far in 2007 we have:

139 Adoptions
32 Birds in foster to adopt situations
158 Surrenders

It's great to see that the number of adoptions and FTAs exceed the intake!   Hopefully we can maintain this trend through the rest of the year!

Here's a wonderful example of how animal rescues (and in this case, Parrots!!) can help people as much as the people can help the animals.

This is a really great example of the symbiosis that we can dream to achieve, as a rescue, with people who really need our help.
