Welcome to MickaCoo! We are a division of Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue dedicated to the rescue of doves and pigeons, a sadly overlooked segment of the avian companion population.
9/20 Update: Six king pigeons purchased from a live food market and set free (to save their lives) that wound up at SF Animal Care & Control (because they have no survival skills) are now at Andy's Pet Shop in San Jose. They're young birds (about 6 weeks) and very sweet.
Don't feel that YOU can help out right now? You can by spreading the word. Tell someone that you think would provide a good bird home why you think so and then tell them about Mickaboo!
Andy's Pet Shopin San Jose has been open for more than 50 years. Last year it was purchased by Mickaboo Volunteer Lissa Shoun and, instead of buying puppies and birds from breeders to sell, she's providing room and board for rescued animals that are available for adoption. She's got rabbits and dogs and cats and fish and hamsters and a gianormous iguana and a toucan named Mango and now, six king pigeons.
If you go visit them, say sweet things softly. They like that.
To know more about Andy's, read the story Landmark becomes haven for rescued animals recently published in the San Jose Mercury News.

That's easy! Just send an email to sponsorship@mickaboo.org. Tell us:
Which bird you would like to sponsor, or if you would like to sponsor the bird of a particular species in greatest need, the bird of any species in greatest need.
Your sponsorship amount and how you would like to donate: check, credit card, or PayPal.
If you would like to be acknowledged on our website and how: first and last name, first name and last initial, first name only - city and state added to any of these.
Every Bird Gets An Equal Chance. That's the underlying principle of Mickaboo. Once a bird is in our care, we provide all the medical care s/he requires. We do not "triage" birds or spend more money on large species than small. We only euthanize a bird when s/he is suffering without the possibility of recovery. We provide hospice care for terminally ill birds who are not suffering.
As you can imagine, this means that some of our birds have very large vet bills. Your sponsorship funds help cover the costs of veterinary care for these birds in greatest need. Since we do not have paid employees, you can be sure that your donation goes directly to the birds. Why not sponsor or give a gift of sponsorship today?
You can sponsor any bird currently in our care by Clicking the Sponsor Me! link listed right under a bird's adoption status.
Please note! Our birds' lives are subject to sudden changes. If a bird is removed from the sponsorship program, we may transfer your sponsorship funds to another bird in need. Sponsorship does not imply any legal rights over the bird or its care.
Doves and pigeons, rescued from local animal shelters, make great pets. They're sweet, smart, calm & full of personality but, because people aren't aware of them, they often can't find good homes. These domesticated birds can't survive in the wild and are relatively easy to care for (quiet, non-biting, non-chewing, non-plucking).
Doves and pigeons need:
Safe place (indoors or outdoors, protected from weather and predators)
Room to move (3' high x 3' deep x 5' long is good for 4 to 6 small doves or 1 to 2 large pigeons)
Fresh food (dove or pigeon feed), water, grit & greens daily
Company (either yours or another bird's)
Family planning (if you have a mated pair, you need to replace real eggs w/ fake ones)
Avian Vet Care if they become sick or injured
